Background

les morley

I grew up in Montreal; Providence, Rhode Island; and, since the age of seven, in Kingston. I attended local schools in Kingston, including Duncan McArthur Public School (now closed); Centennial Public School; Calvin Park Public School and Loyalist Collegiate and Vocational Institute.

Initially I left town for my post-secondary education, attending Montreal's McGill University for my undergraduate degree. Ultimately, I returned to Kingston to attend Queen's University's Law School for my Bachelor of Laws degree. During my time at Queen's I was a Group Leader with Queen's Law Students Legal Aid Services. I continue to upgrade my education, recently completing a business computer certificate program at St. Lawrence College and completing miscellaneous professional continuing education courses.

Community Activities

From an early age I was active in the community, as a member of the choir of the Cathedral Church of St. George and as a participant in various sporting activities including hockey with the Church Athletic League and box lacrosse with a now defunct local league. Later, I was a cadet in the Fort Henry Guard.

As an adult, over the years I have continued to be involved in community activities, including sitting on the board of many local organizations, including the following:

 • Big Brothers of Kingston & District;

 • Kingston Co-Operative Homes Incorporated;

•  the Community Editorial Board of The Kingston Whig-Standard;

 • Kington and District Immigrant Service which was succeeded by Immigrant Services Kingston and Area

Professional Activities

My professional activities include training prospective lawyers as an Instructor with the Bar Admissions Course, in the course of which I conducted classes in the areas of sentencing, alternative dispute resolution and professional responsibility; acting as a mediation coach for the Mediation Centre of Southeastern Ontario; and sitting as a judge in the regionals for the American Bar Association's Client Counseling Competition. I have been an articling principal.

I am an active member of the Citizenship and Immigration Section  of the Ontario Bar Association, of which I have been a member of the Executive since 2006; the Frontenac Law Association for which I serve on the Advisory Committee; the Kingston Criminal Defence Lawyers Association, of which I am secretary and Treasurer; and the Ontario Prison Lawyers Association, of which I am President. I am a participating member in the Kingston Collaborative Family Law Association; and the Canadian Council of Refugees. I am a member in good standing of the Law Society of Upper Canada, and a member of Prison Law Advisory Committee of Legal Aid Ontario.

I have been accredited as a Family Mediator by the Ontario Association for Family Mediation.
